Walker (Sonny) McCulloch

Walker (Sonny) McCulloch is a 5th generation member of St. Paul’s parish tracing his ancestry back to his paternal great-great grandparents who migrated from England to Jeffersonville, IN in 1850.  They were confirmed at St. Paul’s in 1851.  A maternal 5thgreat grandfather was a vestry member at St. David’s Church (C of E), Radnor, PA before the Revolutionary War.  Sonny's roots in the Anglican Church go back to Henry VIII.  He was appointed Verger of the parish by the Rev. Susan Mills in 1997 and has subsequently been reappointed by each succeeding rector, and by the current co-pastors.

The office of verger is traced well back into the 13th century in the Church of England and is continued in the Episcopal Church in the United States.  Sonny is well versed in church and parish history and liturgy.  He schedules and trains acolytes, lectors and lay Eucharistic ministers in addition to his normal Sunday duties of “protecting the procession” as vergers have done for centuries.  Sonny is a member of the Vergers Guild of the Episcopal Church.  He has served as a vestry member, Senior Warden and Junior Warden,  as a member of the diocesan Committee on Mission Strategy and the diocesan History Committee. He currently provides leadership on the Vestry, the Liturgy Planning Team and the Benefit Concert Committee.
